# Glossary

Comprehensive list to understand Comet and its purpose

## Web3

Web3 is a term used to describe the third generation of the internet, which is focused on decentralization and the use of blockchain technology.

It enables users to interact with decentralized applications (dApps) and manage their digital assets or cryptocurrency directly from a browser.

## Wallet

A cryptocurrency wallet or wallet for web3, like Comet, is software used to store and manage cryptocurrency assets. It enables users to send, receive and store cryptocurrencies, and in some cases, interact with decentralized applications (dApps) on web3.

## DApp

A decentralized application (dApp) is an application that is built on a blockchain or other decentralized network. It operates without a central authority, and is often used to enable secure and transparent transactions and interactions.

**Examples of dapps:**

* safeswap.io
* inheriti.com

## Private Key

A private key is a secret code that is used to access a cryptocurrency wallet and authorize transactions. It is essential for the security of cryptocurrency assets, and must be kept confidential and secure at all times.

**Examples of private keys:**

```
f9d2b0c6c7102c52231f301b76bc0b1d6b1c466bda7eac9c62cb8f63f1be4d11
```

```
c8a2fb1a89c7d2e1cf3b3a94f26a238bdab5b5d00e5f5e9f9c5af1ec55d0d086
```

## Seed Phrase (Mnemonic)

A seed phrase, also known as a mnemonic, is a list of words that are used to backup and recover a cryptocurrency wallet. It is typically comprised of 12-24 words, and provides an additional layer of security in case the private key is lost or compromised.

**Examples of seed phrases:**

```
auction weapon tell canvas park penalty suffer shrug green glove donor plate
```

```
intact maple clown oxygen gun tenant mobile book vacuum trial banner dinosaur
```

## Keystore File

A Keystore file is a file that contains an encrypted version of a private key.

It is often used to backup and store private keys offline, and can be used to restore access to a wallet in case the original private key is lost or compromised.

## Wallet Password

A password for a browser extension wallet, like Comet, is used to protect your wallet data stored locally on your device. It functions as an additional layer of security to prevent unauthorized access to your wallet if someone else gains access to your device.

When you create a new Comet wallet, you are provided with a private key and a 12-word seed phrase (mnemonic). These are the keys to your crypto kingdom and should be kept safe and secure at all times.

The private key and seed phrase are used to access your wallet and make transactions. They are unique and related to your wallet only and can be used to recover your wallet if you ever lose access to your device, get a new device or uninstall Comet.

They also can be used to import or restore your wallet into another browser extension wallet.

In contrast, the password for your Comet wallet is stored locally on your device and is used to encrypt your wallet data. This means that the password is not sent over the internet and is not stored on Comet's servers.

It's important to note that while the password is an additional layer of security, it should not be used as a substitute for keeping your private key and seed phrase safe. A password will not protect your wallet if your private key or seed phrase get stolen, it'll only prevent someone from gaining access to your wallet if they get access to your device.

## Hot Wallet vs Cold Wallet

A **hot wallet**, like Comet, is a cryptocurrency wallet that is connected to the internet and used for frequent transactions, while a **cold wallet** is a cryptocurrency wallet that is not connected to the internet and used for long-term storage, typically a hardware wallet or paper wallet.

## Self-Custody

Self-custody refers to the practice of taking full responsibility for the security and management of your digital assets. In self-custody, you have full control over your private keys and are not relying on a third-party service provider to manage your funds. This is typically achieved through the use of a non-custodial wallet, like Comet, where you manage your own private keys and are responsible for ensuring the safety of your assets.

Self-custody is often seen as the most secure way to store digital assets, as it eliminates the risk of loss or theft from a third-party provider.&#x20;

## Custodial Wallet vs Non-Custodial Wallet

A **custodial wallet** is a type of digital wallet where a third-party service provider holds and manages your funds on your behalf. This means that you do not have direct control over your private keys, and your assets are stored on a centralized server. Custodial wallets are often provided by exchanges and other financial institutions and are known for their convenience and ease of use. However, they also carry a higher risk, as the third party could be malicious, fraudulent, hacked, go bankrupt, or be subject to government seizure.

On the other hand, a **non-custodial wallet** (like Comet) is a type of digital wallet where you have full control over your private keys and manage your own funds. This means that you are responsible for the security and storage of your assets, typically through the use of a software wallet. Non-custodial wallets are known for their security and privacy, as well as their flexibility and accessibility. However, they also require a higher level of responsibility on your part.

# YKYC

Own what's yours.

## Your Keys, Your Crypto (= YKYC)

We believe you should have full control over your own assets, no one else. Thus it's important you keep the private keys of your wallet in your own hands. That's why for Comet, we follow the YKYC philosophy.

**Because your keys = your crypto.**

YKYC means that you and only you have control over your private keys and assets.

When you use a centralized exchange or custodial wallet, you're giving up control of your keys to a third party and behind the scenes they're managing your assets for you.

This can be risky, as the third party could be malicious, fraudulent, hacked, go bankrupt, or be subject to government seizure.

Comet is different. You're the only one in charge and you'll always have full control over your own assets and private keys. This means that only you have access to your funds, and only you can transfer them to any other wallet or exchange at any time, without relying on anyone or asking anyone for permission.

**"Not Your Keys = Not Your Crypto".**

But be careful, managing your own keys also means that if you lose access to those keys, there's no one that can help you. You're the one in charge and you're the only one responsible for the safety of your funds.

It's obvious that it's important to store your private keys and seed phrases on the most secure ways possible and never get them stolen or lose them.

# Wallet Management

Stay in control.

We want to make it as easy as possible for you to manage your digital assets. That's why we offer a range of wallet management settings that give you more control over your wallet experience.

## Wallet Name

Comet offers the ability to [create multiple wallets](/features/multiple-wallets), giving you more control over your digital assets. Each wallet has its own unique address, private key, and seed phrase, ensuring that your crypto assets are kept separate and secure.

To help you keep track of your different wallets, you can assign a custom name to each one. Please note that this name is only used internally within the app, and is not visible to anyone else. It's a helpful way for you to recognize and easily switch between your different wallets.

When changing the name of a wallet, it's important to choose a name that is easy for you to remember and differentiate from your other wallets.

## Currencies

With Comet, you have the option to switch between different currencies. This can be especially helpful if you're someone who frequently trades between different cryptocurrencies, or if you prefer to view your balances in a particular currency.

**Available currencies:**

* Dollar ($)
* Euro (€)

## Hide Zero Token Balances

If you're someone who likes to keep things tidy, you might find it helpful to hide any token balances that have a zero balance. This can help you to focus on the tokens that you're actively using, without getting bogged down by clutter.

## Password Management

We understand that keeping your digital assets safe and secure is a top priority. That's why we've made it simple to change your Comet wallet password whenever you need or want to.

Please note that while your password provides an additional layer of security, it should not be used as a substitute for safeguarding your private key and seed phrase. It's important to keep all of your wallet information secure to protect your assets.

[Learn more about your wallet password](/getting-started/glossary#wallet-password)

## Import / Export Your Wallet

Comet offers a convenient way to import and export your wallet(s). This can be useful if you want to switch to Comet from another wallet app and you want to take an existing wallet address with you, or if you want to back up your Comet wallet for safekeeping.

### Private Key and Keystore File

In case of any unforeseen circumstances or technical issues, you can restore your wallets quickly by importing your [private key](/getting-started/glossary#private-key) or [keystore backup file](/getting-started/glossary#keystore-file) (.json). This ensures that you don't lose access to your valuable assets and provides you with peace of mind knowing that you have a backup option available.

### Seed Phrase (Mnemonic)

Another way to access your digital assets in case you lose access to your device or face any technical issues is restoring your wallet via the [seed phrase](/getting-started/glossary#seed-phrase-mnemonic). This ensures that you can always recover your wallets and digital assets, even if you encounter any problems with your device or Comet

We hope these features offer you flexibility, control, and peace of mind, allowing you to focus on your assets without worrying about security or losing access to your funds to a third party.

{% hint style="warning" %}
It's important to remember to keep your wallet's private key and seed phrase safe and secure at all times. Anyone who has access to this information can access and manage the assets stored within your wallet.
{% endhint %}

# Multiple Wallets

Providing added flexibility and security for managing your digital assets.

Who says you can only have one wallet? :thinking:

Comet makes it easy for you to manage multiple wallets, giving you more control over your digital assets. With the ability to create multiple wallets and easily switch between them, you can keep your various portfolios, tokens and coins better organized too.

## Each Wallet is Unique

Each wallet you create in Comet will have its own unique address, private key, and seed phrase. This means that each wallet is completely independent of the others, providing an extra layer of security and privacy for your digital assets.

To create a new wallet, simply click the "[Create a New Wallet](/user-guides/create-a-new-wallet)" button on Comet's main screen. Give your new wallet a name, and Comet will generate a new address, private key, and seed phrase for you.

The name you give each wallet is only for your own internal use, to help you recognize which wallet you're working with at any given time.

## Easily Switch Between Your Wallets

Once you've created multiple wallets, you can easily switch between them via Comet's interface.

It's important to remember to keep each wallet's private key and seed phrase safe and secure. If you lose access to these and someone takes your funds, you won't ever be able to access the digital assets stored within that wallet.

# Portfolio Balance

An easy way to track the value of your entire portfolio

## Total Wallet Balance in Fiat

Comet makes it easy for you to keep track of your entire portfolio balance, not just the amount of native gas tokens you hold as often is the case.

With most wallets, it can be difficult to get an accurate picture of your total portfolio value in fiat money. However, Comet's user-friendly interface provides a clear overview of your entire portfolio balance in [the currency of your choice](/features/wallet-management#currencies).

## Balance Per Token in Fiat

In your Comet wallet you'll also see a clear breakdown of all the tokens you hold along with their respective values in your chosen fiat currency.

## Real-Time Value

Your total portfolio balance is constantly updated in real-time, ensuring that you always have an accurate picture of your portfolio's value.&#x20;

With the custom token feature, you can easily add any token to your Comet wallet that isn't automatically listed. This means that you can manage all of your digital assets in one place, without having to switch between multiple wallets or platforms.

All you need to do is input the token's address and the token will be added to your wallet. From there, you can manage and track your custom tokens just like any other token in your wallet.

This feature gives you the freedom to manage any token you want, regardless of whether or not it is automatically supported by the Comet wallet. It's just one more way that Comet provides flexibility and convenience for managing your digital assets to give you more control over your wallet experience.

# Auto-Lock

The Auto-Lock feature is providing Comet users with enhanced security, especially in environments where computers are shared or left unattended for short durations.

## **What is Auto-Lock?**

Auto-Lock automatically secures your Comet wallet after a period of inactivity.

This is a built-in safeguard to ensure that even if you forget to manually lock your wallet, it won't remain accessible indefinitely.

## **How It Works**

* After **5 minutes of inactivity**, your Comet wallet will lock itself.
* Once locked, any attempt to access the wallet will require the wallet's password.

Ensure you only send tokens that are compatible with VeChain. Transferring other tokens can result in a permanent loss of those funds. Comet currently supports **VET**, **VTHO and VIP180** tokens on the vechain network.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
If you're curious about your transaction history or want to verify a received token, click on **"View your wallet on the blockexplorer."**
{% endhint %}

<br>

# Switch Wallets

In Comet, switching between your multiple wallets is easy and can be done in two ways:

1. You can either [lock your current wallet and then unlock another](/user-guides/lock-unlock-wallet)<br>

   <figure><img src="/files/6mqjWeiMs8BJuhsINEst" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
2. or simply use the dropdown menu within the currently active wallet:

<figure><img src="/files/PUWg9czflc3pWeR7GUrf" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="warning" %}
Comet will only ask for your wallet password when you're unlocking a wallet, not during switching from one wallet to another. The initial unlocking of Comet is a basic protective measure to ensure no one can immediately view your balances if they access your device.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
While wallet addresses themselves aren't encrypted since they're considered non-sensitive, any action that involves the private key, such as sending tokens or signing a transaction, will prompt you to enter the specific wallet's password. This ensures your tokens and transactions remain secure at all times.
{% endhint %}

# Backup Your Private Key

Avoid text documents or writing down your private keys and seed phrases on a piece of paper. Make a decentralized, encrypted backup instead.

Your private key is the gateway to your wallet and cryptocurrencies. Losing access to it or having it compromised can lead to irreversible consequences.

So, you better make sure to have a secure backup for it.

While traditional methods of backing up your private key like writing them down on paper or storing them in a text file are risky and outdated, the flagship product of Safe Haven's ecosystem, Inheriti®, offers a revolutionary and secure way to backup your data.

## How to backup your private key or seed phrase?

1. **Get SafeKey Devices**: Acquire one or more SafeKey devices through [safekey.be](http://safekey.be/).
2. **Encrypt and Split Your Data**: Navigate to [inheriti.com](http://inheriti.com/) to encrypt your private key (or seed phrase) and divide it into multiple shares.
3. **Store Encrypted Shares**: Inheriti® will store these encrypted shares on your SafeKey device(s).
4. **Decentralized Backup Storage**: In addition to your SafeKey, Inheriti® creates backup shares which are stored on multiple storage layers such as the blockchain and cloud.
5. **Destroy Any Evidence**: With your data securely encrypted and stored, you can safely destroy any paper or document containing your private key or seed phrase.
6. **Decryption and Data Retrieval**: Should you ever need to access your private key or seed phrase, the multiple encrypted data shares must be recombined through Inheriti®. This ensures that even if one storage method is compromised, your data remains inaccessible without the complete set of shares.

## Protect what's important

Using Inheriti® for your backups doesn't just restrict you to private keys or seed phrases.

You can securely backup any sensitive data, ensuring it's both protected from threats and accessible when needed.

# Make Your Wallet Inheritable

What happens to your wallet when you die?

Your crypto is more than just digital tokens, they're a part of your legacy.

And with the rise of cryptocurrencies, a new question has arised: "What happens to my crypto when I die?". The flagship product of Safe Haven's ecosystem, Inheriti®, offers a revolutionary and secure way ensure your wallet is passed on securely and trustlessly.

## Setting Up Your Crypto Inheritance Plan with Inheriti®

1. **Acquire SafeKey Devices**: Begin by obtaining several SafeKey devices from [safekey.be](http://safekey.be/).
2. **Encrypt and Fragment Your Wallet Data**: Head over to [inheriti.com](http://inheriti.com/) to encrypt essential wallet data, such as your private key and seed phrase. This data is then fragmented into multiple unreadable shares.
3. **Primary Storage of Encrypted Shares**: These shares are stored on your SafeKey device(s), ensuring you always have primary access.
4. **Decentralized Backup**: In addition to your SafeKey, Inheriti® creates backup shares which are stored on multiple storage layers such as the blockchain and cloud.
5. **Destroy Any Evidence**: With the knowledge that your data is securely fragmented and stored, you can destroy any paper or document that contains sensitive information.
6. **Involve Your Beneficiaries**: Hand over a SafeKey to every individual you intend to include in your crypto inheritance plan. This action ensures they have the necessary piece of the puzzle to access your wallet when the time comes.
7. **Inheritance Plan Execution**: For your heirs or beneficiaries to access the encrypted data, they must come together to recombine the shares. This process ensures your wallet remains secure and can only be accessed with collective effort.

Diversifying the distribution of SafeKeys among trusted family members or beneficiaries not only ensures a seamless transition of your wallet, but also adds an extra layer of security. If one share is lost, the inheritance can still be accessed by including a backup share.

## **Challenges**

In today's digital age, we store more and more of our sensitive data online. From personal information like credit card details, social security numbers, medical records, to passwords and private keys to access digital assets like cryptocurrencies and online accounts.

The amount of sensitive information we store digitally is constantly growing.

However, despite the convenience of storing data online, on your hard drive or just on a piece of paper, they also present a significant risk.

Data breaches, phishing, theft, hacks and other cyber attacks are becoming increasingly common, leaving individuals and businesses vulnerable to having their sensitive data stolen or compromised.

Additionally, in the event of an individual's death, their digital assets and online accounts can be difficult to access and transfer to beneficiaries or business partners.
